Occupational Asthma

Occupational asthma is the most common type of work-associated lung disorder and affects a large number of workers, especially in industries such as painting, chemical processing and even electronics, in which workers are exposed to irritant chemicals on a daily basis. However occupational asthma can occur in basically any job, and often the trigger can be something completely unexpected.

Usually the irritant is inhaled, however in some cases it could be absorbed through the skin. As with other types of asthma, occupational asthma is a serious condition and can be highly problematic as complete avoidance for some workers is not possible due to work commitments.

Management is the key to avoiding an attack, so even for those workers cannot change jobs, strategies should be put in place to minimise exposure to the problematic chemical(s). Medications should be kept on close hand in case of an attack, and co-workers and management should be informed of how to respond, should a worker require medical attention.

Treatment for occupational asthma is the same as for other types of asthma and involves a combination of medications, diet and gentle exercise under the strict supervision of a medical professional.

As with other types of asthma, occupational asthma sufferers may also benefit from holistic, naturopathic or "home" remedies, which can be used in conjunction with traditional medicines to deliver effective relief from asthma symptoms.

If you believe that your occupation is causing you to get asthma, speak to your boss as well as your doctor as there may be a simple way to minimize your contact with the location which is causing asthmatic symptoms at work.
