Asthma: Childhood Asthma
Childhood asthma is a very common problem amongst young people today and is the most common reason for children missing school. Asthma in children is especially problematic as they are highly active and so can easily trigger an attack just through playing.
Children are also not as aware of the early signs of a pending attack so may not receive medical care as rapidly as would be ideal.
For this reason it is very important that an asthmatic child be made aware of their condition so they can notify teachers, parents or friends when they are feeling short of breath. When not in the care of their parents, they should be supervised by someone who knows how to spot signs of an attack and respond should the child need treatment while in their care.
Childhood asthma cannot be cured at this time. There is believed to be a genetic component to some forms of childhood asthma, however not in all cases.
Asthma in children can be triggered by many different things, including exercise, allergy, and chemicals including cigarette smoke and even laughing or other emotional reactions.
If you suspect your child might have asthma or shows any signs of breathing difficulties, it is very important that you speak with a doctor immediately. Undiagnosed childhood asthma is potentially fatal and early detection gives your child the best chance of treatment.
