Asthma in Adults

Although asthma often starts in childhood, many people will not start to develop symptoms of asthma until they are in mid to later life. Asthma in adults can be especially problematic, as often the symptoms can be confused with other ailments and as a result the asthmatic condition may go undiagnosed for years.

The usual symptoms are breathlessness, wheezing, coughing, especially at night, and tightness of chest. These can be exacerbated in the older adult as the lungs become less efficient with age, and therefore the symptoms of asthma can be more severe and their consequences more serious.

As a result it is important that all family members as well as people in the workplace are notified, so they are prepared to respond appropriately in the event of an emergency.

As with early-onset asthma, asthma in adults is usually triggered by environmental factors, such as dust mites, smoke, pollen, animal dander, or exposure to chemicals in the workplace. Minimising exposure to the irritant in the most important form of management, along with diet and exercise.

Obesity is a risk factor for adult asthma, so patients that are overweight should consult with a nutritionist to tailor a weight loss plan. And of course, proper medication in strict consultation with a general practitioner is essential to ensure that symptoms are controlled.
