Asthma is a serious, chronic condition in which the airway becomes inflamed and engulfed in mucus, leading to difficulty breathing. Asthma suffers also have periodic episodes, call "asthma attacks" in which their airway further constricts, leading to shortness of breath.
Attacks vary in severity and duration, though in the worst cases can lead to brain damage or even death if not treated.
Attacks can be brought on by any number of different things, including cold climate, exercise or allergy. Different asthma patients may be triggered by different events; each patient is different.
Generally asthma starts in childhood, and at present there is no cure; asthma patients are forced to manage their condition for the rest of their lives. The treatment options for asthmatic patients are limited to anti-inflammatory agents, especially steroids, which are only partially effective. Asthmatics also carry inhalers containing airway-relaxant mediation which provides rapid, short-term relief from constriction during mild attacks.
However the most effective form of treatment for asthma involves making changes to diet and lifestyle, in order to minimise exposure to trigger factors such as cold air or allergens and to build a healthy immune system to help fight the disease.
This website aims to bring you information relating to all aspects of asthma including what causes it, prevention and of course, treatment options.
